I just watched an advanced screening of The Eyes of Tammy Faye. I was so disappointed. It was like watching an SNL parody of a Lifetime movie. Nothing felt real - like satire, but it wasn't. Then, there's the acting and the makeup. Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield came off as caricatures of Tammy and Jim. The director did them no favors.
The film also serves a paint-by-numbers narrative that feels plotted via a Wikipedia entry on Jim Bakker. Nothing digs below the surface to give us anything good or bad. We never see the humans behind the lights and makeup. Jim and Tammy Faye are just tabloid fodder used as tabloid fodder in the story.
It was just a weird, quasi-fluff piece that didn't look very hard or deep into much of anything in this insane story of liars and grifters. The hypocrisy, sins, and abject deceptive evil of the Bakkers get glossed over in the soapy drama. By the time the credits roll, the filmmakers have done their best at a half-assed attempt to pardon Tammy Faye simply because she was naive. The film gives and admirable try, but lands about as well as most Christian films.
Much like the legacy of Jim and Tammy Bakker, this film is trash and a waste of money.
